How to Grip Your Own Golf Clubs
A quick, practical guide for regripping at home. Tools, supplies, and technique.
Tools you need
- Bench vise
- Rubber shaft clamp
- Hook blade or utility knife (use a hook blade for graphite)
- Grip tape (double-sided)
- Grip solvent or mineral spirits
- Towel and a small catch pan
- Ruler or straight edge
Supplies
- New grips
- Extra tape for build-up (optional)
- Paper towels
Step-by-step technique
1) Secure the club
- Clamp the shaft in the rubber vise clamp.
- Keep the club stable. Do not crush the shaft.
2) Remove the old grip
- Cut from the top down.
- Peel the grip off.
- Remove all old tape. Clean residue with solvent.
- Dry the shaft.
3) Apply grip tape
- Match tape length to grip length.
- Wrap evenly. Avoid gaps and wrinkles.
- Cover the butt end with tape to seal it.
- Add extra layers if you want a thicker feel.
4) Add solvent
- Cover the grip vent hole with a finger.
- Pour solvent into the grip and shake to coat the inside.
- Pour excess solvent over the taped shaft.
5) Install the new grip
- Start the grip straight and push in one smooth motion.
- Push until fully seated. Do not stop halfway.
6) Align and clean up
- Square the grip to the clubface from the address position.
- Adjust fast while wet.
- Wipe off excess solvent.
7) Let it dry
- Rest the club grip-end down.
- Wait 2 hours before hitting balls.
- Full cure takes 12 to 24 hours.

- Use a hook blade on graphite shafts.
- Use plenty of solvent so the grip slides on clean.
- Measure grip size before you start.
- Do one club first to dial in your process.
